Tewkesbury Show - 11th January 2003

An excellent entry of 144 Syrians and 60 Dwarfs for the first show of the year. Many thanks to Melissa and Sarah for judging and their pen and book stewards, the sales team and to Sue and Mark who kept us all fed and watered!

Congratulations to all winners especially Wellington hams and Michelle Newbury who won B.I.S. in Dwarfs and Syrians respectively.

At the end of the day the hall was tidy and swept clean in record time - thanks to all. This enabled us to drive home for part of the way in daylight.

Secretaries Notes

Welcome to our new member Lindsey Skelton from Stratford on Avon, Warks. We will be holding a committee meeting at the Shurdington Show, so if anyone has anything they wish to put forward, please see one of the committee members or myself. I hope those who came along to our last show at Quinborne enjoyed the new venue, it was just a pity that more of the public didn't come along to join us.

This week I have received two telephone calls from people who have been trying to contact us and found it very difficult to locate any details. One lady took over 3 weeks before finding my telephone number (not everyone has access to the internet) and only through sheer determination found us. Most people would have given up long before then. We really do need to step up our publicity, so if anyone can help by putting up posters advertising the club, please have a word with Andrew Bryan our publicity officer who will be only too happy to assist. Good places could be Pet Shops, Vets, Garden Centres, Supermarket notice boards, Community Centres, Schools etc, etc, the list is endless. See you all at Shurdington.

The show went well. It was nice to see everyone from the Northern Hamster Club again. Thank you to both the judges; Melissa Chamberlain for judging the Dwarfs and to Mick Turnidge for judging the Syrians, especially as they both had long journeys there and back.

Thank you to everyone else who helped, whether it was Book or Pen Stewarding, Sales Table, Kitchen, Raffle and printing the Place Cards. Congratulations to all the winners.

Shurdington Show - 26th April 2003

This show took place at the end of the Easter school holiday and maybe that accounts for the rather low turn out. Despite this we all had a lovely day, there were 89 Syrians and 37 Dwarfs for Andrew Bryan and Tim Groves to judge respectively. My thanks to them and their book and pen stewards, the people on the sales table, Jenny doing the raffle and last but not least Rosie and her excellent team of helpers in the kitchen.

I spent time over the holidays painting and varnishing my 35 show pens. On the day of the show it made me have a good look at other peoples pens. In my opinion there were quite a few Syrian pens that needed a makeover. If you do it before it gets too bad it's much quicker and easier. There are also people still showing in dwarf pens that are not mahogany in colour. I used between 1-5 coats of Ronseal quick drying satin varnish depending on the original colour of the wood. It was easy to use and only took 2 hours between coats. All my pens are now roughly the same shade of mahogany. Congratulations to all the winners

Alcester Show - 19th July 2003

An entry of 67 Syrians and 72 Dwarf hamsters made for a relaxed judging pace at the show. A big thanks to our judges, Jean Tye and particularly Andrew Bryan for stepping in at the last minute!
